About

SoloZone was developed to address a common heating problem affecting people working in open plan offices as well as those working from home. The former group include those who still feel cold even when the thermostat suggests they shouldn’t and the latter group were having to heat the whole house or use a portable heater that was expensive to run and posed a serious fire risk if left unattended.

The Why

So called ‘thermostat wars’ were a constant thorn in my side. You see the temperatures in our open plan offices and meeting rooms were set at 21°C. This satisfied most but some found it too hot and even more too cold. We were reluctant to change the temperature because we were all too aware that each 1°C rise increased energy consumption by 8%.

But of course, there were unintended consequences. Arguments ensued and productivity suffered. Those too hot opened windows and those too cold brought in portable fan heaters from home and secreted them under their desks. The former wasted energy and worsened the situation for the latter whose reaction wasted even more energy and created a potential fire risk, particularly went left on overnight and at weekends. Sounds familiar?

The solution? A discrete radiant panel heater that fits under a desk and economically heats surfaces not the surrounding air. This gentle heat creates a micro-climate that keeps the occupant comfortable regardless of the ambient temperature of the office. It costs only 4p per hour to run and a miserly 11p each year in standby; a fraction of the running cost of a 2kW fan heater. And it’s controlled by hand-held remote that turns it off after a preset period.

Who Am I?

Throughout my long career I’ve always been passionate about sustainability. And, in the last decade before I retired, I led the global sustainability team of a Canadian multi-national engineering company. We enjoyed many successes in our journey towards net zero including the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development. But after I retired, I was haunted by a problem I had be unable to solve. After a year of research, trial and errors, I eventually came up with a solution and SoloZone was born.
