Solving the Heating Problem of the “Shoulder Months”

Those awkward in-between months are back — the times of year when it’s too warm to heat the whole office, yet too cold to work comfortably.

April and early May. September and October. Bright during the day, chilly in the mornings and evenings… and impossible to predict.

So how do we keep people comfortable without running up huge energy bills?

It’s a challenge every year — and with today’s energy prices, it’s becoming even more difficult.

Why traditional desk heaters fall short

Many people plug in a cheap fan heater under the desk. Yes, they heat quickly — but they come with hidden drawbacks:

  • Often no built-in timer, so they can be left running accidentally
  • The rising hot air can become uncomfortable after a while
  • Fan noise affects focus
  • A 2kW heater costs around £0.50 per hour to run
  • Portable heaters are linked to hundreds of fires each year

They’re inexpensive to buy, but costly (and sometimes risky) to use.

A safer, more efficient alternative

Radiant heating panels work differently. Instead of warming the air, they warm surfaces — including you.

Mounted discreetly under the desk, they create a gentle, focused microclimate that keeps your legs and feet warm without heating the whole room.

This is exactly what the SoloZone personal heater was designed for:

  • Permanently mounted — no trip hazard
  • No exposed elements — no fire risk
  • Silent, gentle radiant warmth
  • Remote control with preset run times
  • Ultra-low running cost — around 4p per hour

Yes, it costs more upfront than a fan heater — but thanks to the running efficiency, it can pay for itself in as little as 9 weeks.

And it’s not just for the shoulder months. It brings comfort and cost savings throughout winter too.

Who Am I?

Throughout my long career I’ve always been passionate about sustainability. And, in the last decade before I retired, I led the global sustainability team of a Canadian multi-national engineering company. We enjoyed many successes in our journey towards net zero including the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development. But after I retired, I was haunted by a problem I had be unable to solve. After a year of research, trial and errors, I eventually came up with a solution and SoloZone was born.
